Janakpur is the birthplace of the Hindu goddess Sita and is an important religious site. In ancient times, Janakpur was the capital city of the Mithila region. Janakpur is a very popular area to learn about the Mithila culture and visit the Janaki temple.

Sita was the wife of the Hindu God, Ram. Ram was the prince of the Ayodhya Kingdom and Sita was the princess of the Mithila kingdom. Ram is believed to be the incarnation of the Lord Vishnu and Sita is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi as per great Hindu epic Ramayana. It is also believed that Ram and Sita met in Janakpur and were married to each other there.

Janaki Temple is located in the Janakpur and it is known as Janaki Mandir. This is the only Mughal style temple in Nepal and dedicated to Sita. The temple has a beautiful garden with Vivah Mandap (wedding courtyard) dedicated to Ram and Sita.

There are several pilgrimage sites in and around the dhanushadham area like the temples of Ram, Ganesh, Shiva, Hanuman, Ram Krishna, Panchamukhi Hanuman.

In addition, both the great saints Gautama Buddha, founder of Buddhism, and Vardamana Mahavira, the 24th and final Tirthankara of the Jain religion, are said to have lived in Mithila/Janakpur. The region was an important centre of Indian history during the first millennium.

During the Hindu festival of Vivaha Panchami which occurs in late November or early December, the locals re-enact Ram and Sita’s wedding. Thousands of Hindus come to this festival on a pilgrimage. Another important festival celebrated in Janakpur is Ram Navami festival (Ram’s birthday) which occurs in March or April.
